Understanding Complete and Partial Dentures
If you need to replace one or more missing teeth, you have a lot of options available to you in terms of artificial teeth. This includes modern dentures such as removable partial dentures and full complete dentures. Our dentists here at BLUSH Dental Studio in East Point, Georgia, can discuss the benefits of complete and partial dentures for those looking to restore their smiles!
Partial Dentures
Our dentists may recommend to patients missing one or several teeth the benefits of partial dentures, also referred to as just “partials.” A partial denture is a reliable and removable replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They are used when one or several natural teeth remain within the upper or the lower jaw. The partial denture not only fills the gaps created by the missing teeth but also stops other teeth from changing position.
Partial dentures are typically made of acrylic or metal. Acrylic partial dentures are generally less expensive than metal partial dentures; however, they can be less durable and more prone to breakage than their metal counterparts. Metal partials are usually made of chrome-cobalt alloy and are often preferred for their strength and durability.
Complete Dentures
As an alternative, our team may recommend complete dentures. Complete dentures are commonly used when all of the teeth in an arch (either the upper or lower jaw) must be extracted and replaced. Complete dentures are also made of acrylic or metal, like partial dentures.
Complete dentures are supported by the surrounding soft tissue and bone. In some cases, implants can be used to provide additional support for the dentures. Full dentures generally have a lifespan of about 5 to 7 years before they need to be relined or replaced.
