What is oral cancer?
Oral cancer is a variety or kind of cancer known to form in the tissues in the mouth or throat. It can affect any area of a patient’s mouth. This includes the gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, and the roof and floor of the mouth. Oral cancer might also spread to other parts of the body, such as the neck lymph nodes.
While oral cancer is not as common as other types of cancer, it is still a serious disease that can be life-threatening. According to the American Cancer Society, the actual risk of developing oral cancer, or oropharyngeal cancer, within one’s lifetime is 1 in 60 for men and 1 in 140 for women. 2022 statistics account for 54,000 new cases this year alone, with 11,230 deaths. This is why early detection is so vital for oral cancer, as it can be treated when small and significantly improve one’s chance of overcoming it, experiencing remission, and stopping the spread.
What can I expect at my oral cancer screening with BLUSH Dental Studio?
At BLUSH Dental Studio, we take your oral health seriously. That is why our team offers comprehensive oral cancer exams to all of our patients. During an oral cancer screening, our dentists will visually and physically examine your mouth for any signs or symptoms of cancer. We will also feel for any lumps or bumps on the outside of your neck. If we notice anything abnormal, we may recommend further testing, such as a biopsy, to confirm whether or not you have oral cancer. Cancers may be considered mouth or throat cancer, and treatment varies depending on the type, spread, and severity.
Oral cancer screenings are fast and easy. They could save your life! We recommend that all adults over 18 get an oral cancer screening at least once every year. You may need to get screened more often if you have a family history of oral cancer or other risk factors.
Oral Cancer Screenings FAQs
When should I be concerned with a persistent mouth sore?
Mouth sores are common and usually harmless. However, when a mouth lesion lingers or feels different, it may be a sign of something serious. Generally, pay attention to any sore that does not show signs of healing within two weeks, even if they don’t cause pain. Most are harmless, but some need a closer clinical examination.
Are oral cancer screenings painful?
No. The exam is quick, non-invasive, and comfortable. Your dentist visually examines your lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, and throat to detect cancerous and precancerous conditions. Your exam also includes palpating your gums and throat for any unusual bumps, masses, or swellings. There are no needles or discomfort in a routine screening.
Who needs oral cancer screening?
Everyone needs oral cancer screenings. That is because mouth cancer doesn’t discriminate and can affect patients of all ages and backgrounds. While everyone is at risk, other persons are at a greater risk, especially if you use tobacco or drink alcohol often. Additionally, people aged 40 or older or those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.
How often do I need oral cancer screenings?
Once a year is a good rule for most patients. However, patients at a higher risk may require more frequent screenings. At our office, we include oral cancer screenings as part of your regular check-up, so you don’t have to schedule a separate appointment.
Why is early detection important for oral cancer?
Early detection saves lives. Problems found early are easier to treat. Oral cancer has a 5-year survival rate of over 90% when detected early. However, late-stage diagnosis makes the disease harder to treat, reducing the five-year survival rate to below 50%. Waiting can allow the malignancy to spread to distant areas of the body, making your treatment less effective.
What if my dentist finds a suspicious lesion?
Don’t panic. Many lesions have benign (non-cancerous) explanations. If we spot an irregular sore, patch, or lump, your dentist will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor the area. If there are no signs of improvement, we’ll recommend a biopsy as a definitive test to determine the nature of the abnormality. The objective is to get clear answers and leave nothing to chance.
Is an oral cancer exam expensive?
In many cases, it is not. Screenings are often part of your routine visit and are very affordable. If extra tests are needed, such as a biopsy, there may be added costs. Our dental team will explain everything during the consultation stage.
Does insurance cover oral cancer screenings?
Many insurance plans cover preventive care, including oral cancer screenings. However, coverage varies by plan. That’s why it’s a good idea to verify your benefits before any procedure begins.
Is oral cancer preventable?
Not entirely, but some risk factors are within your control. Here are ways you can reduce the risk of oral cancer.
- Avoid tobacco products
- Reduce consumption of alcohol
- Protect your lips from the sun with sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
- Maintain good oral hygiene and keep up with dental visits
- Eat healthy and manage any immune-suppressing conditions
While not all cases are preventable, these steps help reduce the risk.
