Why Regular Dental Check-ups and Cleanings Are Important
Regular dental check-ups and periodontal cleanings allow the BLUSH Dental Studio team in East Point, Georgia to continually evaluate a patient’s oral health and wellness. This is the best way to get a jumpstart on any potential problems that may be developing. Our team of professionals work routinely with patients to help remove plaque and tartar, obtain x-rays to monitor bone and tooth health, and provide education on the best ways to care for the smile, including tips on brushing, flossing, and the best products to use.
How often should I have a teeth cleaning performed?
At each visit to our practice for routine care, our dental hygienists will provide a deep cleaning of both the teeth and gums to remove plaque, tartar, and calculus. Patients with periodontal disease may also have antibiotics applied to treat bacteria that can be contributing to further infection and inflammation. During these routine examinations, our team can spot the early signs of potential problems and ensure patients have access to the care they need. This includes future treatments such as aesthetic dentistry procedures or restorative dentistry. We also perform an oral cancer screening at each appointment, looking in the mouth and throat for any signs of problems that may require a biopsy to test for and confirm a cancer diagnosis.
What services are provided during a routine evaluation?
The BLUSH Dental Studio team provides the following services for patients when they visit during their six-month appointment:
- Periodontal examination
- Cosmetic evaluation
- Professional dental cleaning (prophylaxis or “prophy”)
- Oral cancer screening
- Low radiation digital x-ray images
During this visit, our team will educate patients on preventing potential problems such as periodontal disease and tooth decay as well as finding effective solutions that help them achieve and maintain oral health and wellness.
Dental Check-ups and Cleanings FAQs
Can my dentist tell if I don’t floss my teeth?
Yes, we can. Flossing cleans the areas between your teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach. When you fail to floss your teeth, plaque builds up and calcifies into tartar that cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. Over time, tartar can lead to gum disease, which can make the gums look red or swollen. They may also bleed easily during dental cleaning. The good news? If you haven’t been flossing, you can get back your optimal oral health with dental cleanings followed by diligent at-home oral hygiene.
Will I need an X-ray during my dental check-up?
Not every time. We take dental X-rays based on your needs. X-rays help detect issues that are not visible to the naked eye, including subgingival cavities, impacted teeth, bone loss, and cysts. X-rays are also needed when planning several dental procedures, including extractions, crowns, fillings, and orthodontics.
We don’t recommend dental X-rays willy-nilly. Your dentist assesses your oral health needs and recommends X-rays only when necessary.
Do dental cleanings hurt?
No! Most teeth cleanings are comfortable. You may feel light pressure or mild sensitivity. However, you may experience mild discomfort if your gums are inflamed. If you experience pain, let us know. Our dental hygienist can adjust the technique to your comfort level. Additionally, we offer sedation dentistry to ensure a stress-free experience for patients with dental anxiety.
What is the difference between deep and standard cleanings?
A standard cleaning is preventive and removes plaque and tartar above the gumline. It’s recommended every 3-6 months to keep the gums and teeth healthy. Deep cleaning extends below the gumline and up to the root surfaces. It’s recommended for patients who have been clinically diagnosed with gum disease. Unlike standard cleanings, deep teeth cleanings are more extensive and require local anesthesia to keep you comfortable.
What if I haven’t been to the dentist in a while?
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Many people fall behind on dental visits because of costs, dental fear, and time constraints. At our office, you’ll never feel judged. The focus will be on your current oral health and getting you back on track. Taking that first step is what matters most.
How long does a dental check-up take?
Most visits take about 45-60 minutes. This includes an exam, oral cancer screening, and a cleaning. If additional treatment is needed, your appointment may take a bit longer. While we aim to make your appointment efficient, you’ll never feel rushed.
What happens if the dentist finds a problem?
Your dentist will explain everything clearly. You’ll learn what the issue is and how to treat it. You will have time to ask questions and understand your options. You don’t have to commit to treatment the same day, but remember, issues are easier and less costly to treat when addressed early.
Do children need dental check-ups and cleanings?
Yes. Everyone requires preventive dental care, including children. Routine oral wellness visits help detect oral issues and monitor growth and development. Dental cleanings remove plaque from areas difficult to brush and floss effectively. Pediatric dental care helps build healthy habits that last well into adulthood.
