Tooth Extractions

Situations Where A Broken Tooth May Need To Be Extracted

While our teeth are made of the strongest material of the human body – enamel – that does not mean our teeth are indestructible. Teeth can break or chip for many different reasons, and, in many cases, a chipped or broken tooth will not cause pain. However, when the situation calls for it, a tooth that is chipped or broken may need to be extracted. When your tooth chips or breaks in the East Point, Georgia area, the important thing is not to panic. The friendly team at BLUSH Dental Studio is here to get you through this experience. Drs. Kisha Carter and Jaime Kim will work with you and do what they can to save your tooth.

While all efforts will be made to save your broken or chipped tooth, there are situations where it will not be possible. Teeth that are damaged can result in infection. If the tooth has broken and exposed nerve endings, you may experience significant discomfort when exposed to air or hot/cold beverages. Chewing can become difficult. Besides broken teeth, let us look at symptoms indicating that your tooth needs to be extracted.

Overcrowding

When teeth are out of place or have shifted, you risk having impacted teeth. Impacted teeth usually don’t offer much use due to their abnormal position in the mouth. Dentists often try to move them into open spaces, but this is not always possible. Teeth at an odd angle can impede the progress of other teeth trying to break through and erupt from the gums. When this occurs, it may be determined that the tooth needs to be extracted. This is a more common issue in younger patients whose permanent teeth are beginning to break through.

Infection

When a tooth begins to decay and does not receive prompt attention, the infection will eventually reach the tooth’s center. This area of the tooth is where the pulp of the tooth resides. This pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and more which play important roles in keeping a tooth healthy. A root canal can usually save the tooth when this pulp becomes infected. However, if one does not choose to undergo root canal therapy, the infection can continue to spread, and the tooth will need to be extracted. If it is not removed, the infection can get into the bloodstream and lead to health issues that include more than just your teeth and gums.

Physical Trauma

Your teeth can be damaged in many ways. You could simply be outside walking the dog, get pulled off balance, and fall on your face. You could be an athlete who takes a blow to the face. There are many events that could result in damage to a tooth or multiple teeth. Call your dentist immediately if this ever happens, and you find that your tooth is badly chipped or broken. Depending on the severity of the damage, the tooth may be saved. However, an extraction may be necessary if the damage is bad enough.
